How often should you change your wiper blades?

Here are some tips on how to spot if it's time to change your wipers

One thing we see plenty of here in Crossings is damaged wiper blades that need to be replaced. …..

Our Toyota trained Technicians always check the wipers of vehicles coming in for a service. They will grade the condition of your wipers, Green, Amber or Red depending on their condition. It is recommended that you change your wiper blades every 6-12 months. Windshield wipers are made from rubber which is degradable, and becomes less effective over time. You should get into the habit of checking your wipers regularly and know what signs to look out for as they begin to wear out. Everyday use, wear and tear, UV rays, good auld soft Irish weather and even the type of washer fluid you mix in with your water can cause your wipers blades to deteriorate. They can become brittle, crack and even tear.

There are a number of signs that will indicate that your wipers need to be replaced.  Your wipers are leaving streaks on the windshield, skipping spots, splitting and of course, the dreaded SQUEEKING!

Streaking: Visual inspection of the wiper blade reveals rubber has hardened/cracked due to exposure over time. The sun’s ultraviolet rays, tree sap or even road tar/road grit can cause damage. Bands of water will remain after each wipe and streaking will become more prominant.

Smearing:The wiper edge is no longer sharp, but rounded due to wear, causing water smear across the screen resulting in cloudy and impaired visibility.

Squeaking:The old/ worn rubber of the blade does not move quietly across the windscreen.

Chattering:Blades that  skip, vibrate, across the windscreen, due to hot and cold temperatures over time or extended period of non-use.

One more thing to note-  You should never use washing up liquid in your windscreen washer reservoirs. The surfactants used for cleaning dishes etc. will ruin the rubber blades of windscreen wipers and not do much good to the paintwork either, due to salt affecting  the metal sections of the wiper arms. Always use an approved additive to the washer system.

You may have noticed one or two of these signs recently but decided to put the job off until you have the time, but it takes no time at all!  You can pop into Crossings on your way to or from work and we can check the condition of the wipers for you, and replace them if needs be: It only takes ten minutes and with prices for a set of starting from €22 you can't go wrong.

You should plan on replacing your wipers at least once a year- for example, when you come in to us for a service. Our technicians will make sure to let you know the condition of your wipers so you can make an informed decision. Window wipers are an essential safety feature, and it’s best to be proactive and replace them before you’re stuck in a storm with a blurred view.

Stay safe on the roads out there!
